General Information
The city was named after Peoria, Illinois. The word “Peoria”
is a corruption of the Illini Indian word for “raging prairie fire”. Peoria is
the fourth largest city in the state of Arizona in terms of land area, and the
ninth largest city in the state in terms of population It is the largest
incorporated city in Yavapai County even though, almost all of Peoria’s current
population resides on the Maricopa side. Peoria is the spring training home of
the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners, who share the Peoria Sports Complex.
Persia was listed in the Top 100 Places to Live in July, 2008. In 1989, Peoria
had established a city council district system, which separated the city into
six geographical districts. Each district elects one member of the city council.

to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 141.7 square
miles (366.9 km²). As of the census of 2000, there were 108,364 people, 39,184
households, and 29,309 families residing in the city. The population density was
784.0 people per square mile (302.7/km²).
